One of my most favorite trips I’ve taken involved taking a cruise around New Zealand. It is definitely in my bucket list to go back again – the cruise was a nice way to get a feel for the area, but it didn’t allow for too much exploration. These photographs were taken either at port or while on the ship.

Easily one of the most beautiful places on earth is Fiordland of the South Island. Our cruise ship took us right through Milford Sound and my goodness was it a sight to behold. One of my favorite shots was a tour boat and kayakers approaching one of the most majestic of the waterfalls seen throughout the Milford Sound.

One of the perks of seeing New Zealand via cruise was when the ship went into port bright and early in the morning. The sights at sunrise were absolutely spectacular. This particular shot was taken while coming into the port of Akaroa located on the South Island.

Because we didn’t have enough of being on an island already, my sister and I decided it would be fun to explore another, smaller island off the coast of Auckland called Rangitoto Island. It’s the youngest volcano located in New Zealand thus is full of beautiful scenery. It even has the bonus of having caves you can explore!

One of the best things about living in the Southwest is the variety of beautiful landscapes that can be found. Below you’ll find my collection of landscape photographs I’ve taken over the years throughout Arizona including several trips to and into the Grand Canyon as well as in my city of Prescott.

This gorgeous shot was taken at Watson Lake near Prescott, Arizona around sunset. Watson Lake is absolutely one of my favorite places to not only photograph, but to hike and enjoy my day as there is just so much I can do there.

If you wanted to get some sunset shots while visiting the Grand Canyon, the Desert View Watchtower is a great choice. Not only will you be able to get some amazing shots of the canyon, you’ll also have a striking subject to add to the shots.

My sister and I recently backpacked down into the Grand Canyon. It was an experience we’ll never forget. The sights were absolutely stunning – this shot was taken while hiking down the South Kaibab trail. Pro tip – make sure to start your hike early enough so that you can make it to at least Ooh Aah point at sunrise. You won’t regret it!

Headshots are a must for getting a step up on the competition in the business field. Impress potential employers or clients with new headshots! Don't forget, preparation for your upcoming headshot or portrait photoshoot is key to make the day as relaxing and rewarding for you as possible.

Headshots are one of the easiest ways to make a great impression on future employers or clients. Preparing for your headshot or portrait session can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. Keep on reading to find out how to look and feel your best for your big day!

WHAT TO WEAR

PROFESSIONAL, WITH PERSONALITY

THE BASICS

Unless you are a creative going into or are already in a creative field, I would suggest sticking with solid colors or simple prints for your outfits. Bright colors and bold patterns can be distracting so steer clear of them. You will want all of the attention on your face. You want your future employer or client to know who you are right off the bat thanks to your amazing headshot.

Make sure your clothes are hole free, freshly laundered, and ironed if need be. Wrinkled shirts will catch the eye and make you look unprofessional. Remember – this is the easiest way to put your best foot forward so even though it’s another step, iron out those wrinkles!

Stay away from branded clothing. Same as with patterns, seeing a brand can be a distraction in your photo. You also don’t want potential employers or clients to see you wearing a brand, especially if it’s one they dislike for some reason or other.

THE LOOK

You want to prepare yourself for your headshot session almost as much as you would for an interview. Where do you want to work? What is your dream job? What businesses are you expecting to apply for?

Ask yourself these questions. Then research what is the typical dress code for what you are looking at. Much like going into an interview, you’ll want your outfit to be one step above their typical attire.

Let’s say you’re a graphic designer and want to work at a design studio. Many studios have a more relaxed dress code, either casual or business casual. So if the places you want to apply have a casual dress code, you’ll want to have business casual outfits for your headshot.

LASTLY

You want the look to be you. Think of these as part of your personal brand. Let your personality shine! If you have an outfit that mostly fits this criteria but are unsure if it will work or not, don’t hesitate to ask me!

FOR YOUR HAIR

DON’T LEAVE THIS TILL LAST MINUTE!

THE BASICS

The main thing is make sure to schedule any haircuts or dyeing a week or so before your shoot. Do not get a major hairstyle change the day before – if anything goes wrong you won’t have time to adjust or fix the problem.

Do make sure to wash and condition your hair the night before or the morning of. If your hair tends to be more dry, start deep conditioning a week before to add in more moisture. Bring a bottle of hair oil to spritz on your hair before the shoot to add some shine if it’s still looking a bit dry the day of the shoot. If your hair runs on the oily side, bring a bottle of dry shampoo and brush to the shoot. If your hair starts looking too oily a quick spritz and brush will help quickly take out oils.

RESEARCH & PRACTICE

If you are wanting to style your hair for the shoot, take the time to both research and try out potential hairdos. The reason you’ll want to try out the styles beforehand is for two reasons – so you know you’ll like how it looks and so that if you have issues putting it together, you won’t be panicking the morning of the shoot.

Pinterest and Instagram are great resources to get ideas for hairstyles. Pinterest is probably the better option since you are more likely to find tutorials on how to create whatever hairstyle you are interested in.

SIMPLE IS BETTER

Much like bright colors and prints with clothing, elaborate hair can be a distraction for headshots. I’m not saying you shouldn’t style your hair! Just don’t go for a wedding or prom-style updo.

MAKEUP & JEWELRY

GO BOLDER THAN USUAL

MAKEUP

I highly suggest that everyone – guys included – wear at least some foundation. This will help to even out your skin tone and will make my post processing job easier and faster – meaning you’ll get more finished photos!

Matte makeup is best, anything with sparkle or gloss can be a distraction for the viewer. I would suggest that those who tend to go for a more natural look with their makeup to add on a bit more for the shoot. Makeup doesn’t look as vibrant as it does in real life so going further than you usually do can make a huge difference.

Again, I may sound like a broken record at this point, but remember – simpler is better!

Acne, cuts, and any other blemishes you are worried about I can remove in post processing, but taking steps to cover things beforehand will always help! If there is anything you know you would want removed in post-processing just let me know during the consultation or the day of the shoot.

JEWELRY

If you don’t usually wear jewelry, don’t feel like you need to for the shoot. If you do, wear the pieces you generally save for fancy occasions. Nicer jewelry translates better through photography and can really up your professional look.

There is an art to coordinating jewelry with outfits, so if you are unsure a little research can go a long way to understanding what necklaces go best with what shirts and more.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST – POSING

THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS RELAX AND HAVE FUN!

BE RELAXED!

I know this is one of the hardest things to do when you have a person standing in front of you taking tons of pictures. Don’t worry, I’ll do my best to make you feel as comfortable as possible and will direct you in how to change your pose in ways that will look better for the camera. You’ll start to relax as the shoot progresses you’ll get into a rhythm of how things go.

If you have any pre-shoot jitters or worries be sure to bring them up during the consultation and I’ll do my best to address them!

STAND TALL AND PROUD

Confidence is key to any pose. Think Superman – his pose wouldn’t look as majestic if he had no confidence. If you feel like you don’t have confidence – fake it. Don’t worry, no one will be able to tell! A great way to build confidence and enthusiasm before a shoot (or any situation for that matter) is to actually do the Superman pose. Try it!

MORE THAN JUST A HEADSHOT

Want to go beyond the usual headshots you see on your LinkedIn? Take some time to find ideas on Pinterest and Instagram, if you find something you’ll really want to try save it and show me, new poses are always fun!

HOW TO PREPARE

GROOMING IS KEY!

THE BASICS FOR DOGS

Make sure your dog knows sit, stay, and is able to come on command. While you may want action shots, it will be easier on you and your pet photographer if your dog can follow these basic commands, especially if you want some some shots in a public area.

I highly suggest getting your dog professionally groomed. If you plan on having your dog get a cut, I would suggest planning for the appointment to be a week before the shoot just in case the fur needs to grow out any. If you trust your groomer though go ahead and schedule for the day before the shoot. But if the grooming does happen a week before, spend a few minutes the night before the photography session giving the pup a good brush down and use some spray on shampoo and conditioner that you won’t have to wash out.

Don’t want to pay for a groomer? Don’t worry, just make sure to give your dog a good bath the day before the session. Then do your best to keep the pup out of mud and puddles (which can be practically impossible I know!) This way your dog will have a great coat for the shoot and will be less likely to have a crazy hair day and end up looking like my pup Koda in the photo above!

BASICS FOR CATS

Brush your kitty the night before! You want their coat to be as smooth and shiny as possible for their day.

If you have a long haired cat definitely make sure there are no matted areas. Some cats can have extremely finicky fur so if they do have some that you can’t brush out, your best bet is to take them to a professional groomer to make sure the cut/grooming is done right. If your cat does end up needing a cut, try to schedule well in advance of your pet’s photography session so their fur will have a chance to grow back out. Make sure to keep up with grooming in the meantime so you won’t have to worry about new matted spots.

ACCESSORIES & PROPS

A GREAT WAY TO ADD SOME FLAIR FOR YOUR PET!

WHAT TO BRING

Pet photography is all about showing off your pet’s personality. Bandanas, fancy collars, outfits, if they have something and you like it (or they love it), bring it!

Make sure any article of clothing has been cleaned beforehand – if you look above you’ll see Koda’s bandana looks rather grungy and rather gross. Unfortunately people will be distracted and think if the bandana is dirty, the dog must be too. While you can’t control how clean your dog’s accessories are during a hike, you will have plenty of time to prepare for your pet’s photography session, so know what you want to bring and clean it!

Is your pup a working dog? Go ahead and bring their vest or other gear, give them a professional headshot or two!

Do they have a favorite toy? Do your best to have it cleaned beforehand and bring it. Toys are a great way to get your pet excited and to bring out their personality for the shoot. One of Koda’s favorite toys is a unicorn, which makes for some very adorable and hilarious photos of him.

Favorite treats are another must. While action shots are great, we will at times need your pet to stay in one place, therefore we’ll need something to reward them with. Plus if your dog makes a funny face when attempting to capture treats thrown at them that will make a perfect photo op!

Be sure to bring plenty of water too! Even an hour long session will make your dog thirsty so bring a bottle and a bowl for them (and you too!)

WHAT WE WONT NEED

Walking harnesses, spike collars, ID tags, things like this can be a distraction for the photo. I know you’ll need a way to walk your dog to the shoot and around the shoot, but keep in mind we’ll want to remove any harnesses and bulky ID tags before the shoot starts or between takes.

RIGHT BEFORE THE SHOOT

MAKE YOUR PET AS COMFY AS POSSIBLE

DOGS

For pet photography sessions that will be in a public location, you’ll want to bring your pup there a few times beforehand so they can get familiar with the area. If its their first time on location the day of the shoot, they’ll be too distracted with all the new smells and sights and will be less likely to listen to you properly.

Also be sure to take 10-15mins before the shoot starts to walk your dog around and let them take care of business. This will also help them run off some energy.

CATS

Cats will need time to adjust to a new location and explore, they just can’t help it. They’ll most likely be on edge, so we’ll want to give them some time to understand they are not under threat and relax.

If you can, also trim your cat’s nails the night before so we don’t have to worry about them getting caught on any of the backgrounds.

Portraits are a great way to preserve your family’s magical moments. Here’s some tips and tricks to make your day as stress free and easy as possible!

WHAT TO WEAR

COORDINATED BUT NOT MATCHING

THE BASICS

Make sure your clothes are hole free, freshly laundered, and ironed if need be. Wrinkled shirts will catch the eye make and will cause people to focus on them instead of your family.

Stay away from branded clothing (think Nike with the huge swoosh). Brands catch the eye and will also distract people from the family. A superhero family is totally okay though!

THE LOOK

Coordinate! What do I mean by coordination? In the simplest terms it would be by color palette.

Let’s say you want to go with red. Now you don’t want everyone to wear the exact same color. Go with different hues of red for everyone – think maroon, brick, crimson, and magenta.

Mix and match – don’t just have everyone wear all red everything or all red shirts. Have someone wear red pants and a white shirt, another in a white skirt and red jacket, another person in a red and white pattern shirt with gray pants, etc.

Going further – don’t want to go with just one color? Pinterest is a great place to find lovely color palettes that you can use to base clothing off of. Something like teal, coral pink, gray, and white is a great palette to start with!

PATTERNS

Careful with patterns here. One person wearing a pattern can be distracting, now throw in three more and now all anyone wants to look at is everyone’s shirts! Best to limit to one type of pattern – such as a subtle plaid – or have one or two of the party with patterns while the others have more solid prints.

POSING

THE SECRET IS NOT TO ACTUALLY POSE BUT TO HAVE FUN!

RESEARCH

As the photographer I will help direct and pose you for photos, but it never hurts for you to get some ideas beforehand. Looking through Pinterest and Instagram will give you great inspiration for various poses you can do and what you would like best to see for your own family photos.

Look to see how to use the location to your advantage. Want to have your photoshoot in the woods? Have some of the family climb a tree! Thinking about a shoot in a grassy field? Have the kids poke their heads out of grass behind you!

BE RELAXED!

The biggest thing to do for a family photo shoot is to have fun! While posing can get you some great shots, it’s often the candid shots that come out the best. Basically don’t feel like once you all have been placed in a pose that you have to grin and stare at the camera – relax, play with the kids, talk amongst each other, it’s the little moments that really make the best photos!

BRING PROPS

Want to include the family dog? We can get some great shots of her playing with the kids! Are you an outdoorsy type family? Turn the shoot into an outdoor picnic! Are you all geeks? Bring those lightsabers for some epic and hilarious shots your entire family will love!

MAKEUP, HAIR, & JEWELRY

SIMPLICITY IS KEY

HAIR

Don’t get everyone’s hair cut the day before the shoot – if a problem occurs you won’t have any time to do anything about it. Get them done a week or two before so the haircuts will still look fresh but will have had time to grow out a bit if there were any issues. Hairstyles should also be simple – with lots of people you don’t want any one person standing out for having a wedding updo.

CHOOSING A PHOTO SHOOT LOCATION

THINK ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER

THE BASICS

Depending on who you are cosplaying choosing a location for your cosplay photo shoot could either be a breeze or a dilemma. Obviously you want the location to be true to your character, but realistically how many medieval castles are there in Arizona?

This will definitely be something we discuss during the consultation period, but you’ll want to really get a good idea of what you want and find around 5 possibilities.

And remember – the location doesn’t have to be exactly the same as locations your character has been in. Maybe your character wasn’t shown in a winter setting with the outfit you cosplay, but if they realistically would have been found in such a setting and you really like it, go ahead and choose that spot!

Be sure to visit your locations beforehand too! The spot may seem perfect on Google Street View but what was once forest may have been hit by a fire, or that river may be in its dry season.

WHAT TO RESEARCH

One big thing to keep in mind if your shoot is in a park or other public location is what laws they have regarding firearms and other weapons. Even fake weapons can be expressly forbidden on such properties.

Some sites may even forbid photography (shocker!).

What sort of facilities does the spot have? This is especially important if you plan on changing cosplays or if there is a long shoot.

If a location you are looking into involves private property, you’ll need to contact the owners for permission to shoot first. If you are unsure how to go about this I will gladly help out!

GET YOUR POSE ON

GET SOME INSPIRATION!

RESEARCH, RESEARCH RESEARCH!

Do not leave this till last minute!

Instagram and Pinterest will be your friends here. Save any photos that you absolutely love. Don’t just stick to images of your character, look at other cosplay photo shoots (or even fan art!) as well. Another great source of inspiration are movie and video game promotional images. Create a folder of all images you save. Once you have a sizable amount, go through and cull them out. If there are similar ones, delete all but the best one or two. If you can’t decide which you like better between two similar poses, keep both.

Follow the genre! If your character is part of a horror genre, follow some instagram accounts who specialize in horror. Fantasy accounts are great for many medieval style cosplays. Doing so will give you some great ideas on how to add different elements and angles to really set your photos apart.

You’ll be amazed to know that there are even posing guides that are geared exclusively to cosplayers. Look for those and save any that apply to you and your cosplay.

Once you’ve created your dream album of shots, you’ll want to send me the finalized set before the shoot so I can get a good idea of what looks you are going for.

NOW TO PRACTICE

Don’t just research poses, practice them. Stand in front of a mirror so you can see how the pose looks for you. You’ll be able to see where you can make adjustments in the pose. Don’t just hold the pose, move through it or into it – many times the best photos are the ones that capture a moment from movement. Yes holding an axe like you are swinging it looks cool, but getting the movement of your hair and clothing really captures the act and looks much more genuine!

Practice lots of times so when cosplay photo shoot comes around you’ll be able to hit the poses instinctively and with ease.

DON’T FORGET YOUR PROPS!

Props are major parts of most cosplays – be sure to practice with them! If your prop is on the heavy side, make sure you can hold a pose with it for at least a minute so I will have time to find just the right angle for the shots.

BUT WHAT IF MY COSPLAY HAS MAGIC OR DRAGONS?

NEVER FEAR! I’VE GOT YOUR BACK!

THE MAGIC OF PHOTOSHOP

This is another reason to take the time to research poses and ideas beforehand. There are many different styles that you can aim for when it comes to the final product and knowing what you want from the beginning will make the entire process easier.

When it comes to creating special effects in photoshop, you need not fear my capabilities. I’ve been working magic in for over 15 years and know a thing or two about turning a shot into a fantastical piece.

Are you wanting to fulfill your lifelong wish of riding a dragon or flying on through the air on a broom to catch a quidditch? Just let me know and we can discuss what exactly will be needed for the shot and how we’ll be able to attain it.

This step of the process is one of the main reasons why cosplay photography is generally a bit more expensive than regular portraits. While editing for cosplay shots is more intensive, the results are well worth it and I know you’ll love the results!

THE MAGIC OF EVERYDAY ITEMS

You’ll be surprised how many special effects can be achieved through using everyday objects! Want to show a fireball burning in your hand? Holding a small light in your hand will create the correct lighting effects for the final shot. Want to look like you’re facing off a dragon? All you’ll need is a toy dragon and some forced perspective to get a great action shot!

This is another reason to research and collaborate with me before the shoot so I will know what to bring in order to help create these effects.

I’M A COSPLAYER MYSELF AND I CAN UNDERSTAND YOUR CONCERN!

BRING A BUDDY

This shoot is all about you, and you should feel as comfortable and at ease as possible while it happens. One great way to do this is bring a friend (or significant other, parent, whoever you would feel best with) along. I actually suggest bringing a friend for another reason – they can join in on the shoot as a secondary character (think fighting scenes) for your character to interact with. Just remember that if your buddy does want to jump in on the action, make sure they have the appropriate clothing to fit in with your character and shoot. If they are uncomfortable with showing their face, just let me know and they will always be either a shadowy figure or have their face hidden.

LET ME KNOW BEFOREHAND

If there is anything that will make you uncomfortable in any way, let me know beforehand or during the shoot. Hate heights? Don’t want to climb that rock? Hate that one angle? Let me know!

Being in front of a camera can be nerve-racking, especially if it’s your first cosplay photo shoot. You can review the photos throughout the shoot if that helps and we can do a warm-up period so you can get a feel for things. I want things to be as stress free and fun as possible for you!

Whether you live in the Prescott area or are just visiting, Watson Lake is a great spot for some great photo ops. Here's a quick run through of what Watson Lake has to offer for your photography needs.

Prescott, Az is a very photogenic area in general. Mountains, forests, lakes, plains, rock formations – Prescott basically has it all! How do you possibly choose which spot is the location for you? Let me try to help by giving you an overview of a few locations in the area. First lets go over Watson Lake.

I will be honest with you – I love Watson Lake. Ever since I moved here it has been one of my favorite spots in the quad city area. Located just four miles from downtown Prescott, it’s almost every photographer’s dream – you have the lake itself, the rocks of the amazing Granite Dells, the trees of the Watson woods, grassy fields, canyons, streams, even bridges!

Basically what I’m saying is for one location (and a bit of walking) you can have several very different backdrops. How great is that!

Watson Lake

Let’s start with the lake itself – beautiful waters, rocks to one side, trees to the other, and teeming with lots of wonderful wildlife. The dock located by one of the boat ramps allows for some great shots of the water with the rocks and hills as a backdrop. Want to be more adventurous? You can rent a kayak or canoe for one of those spectacular in the water shots surrounded by the beautiful Granite Dells.

Watson Woods

Next up is the Watson Woods. A short walk away from the lake’s dock, the woods are full of cottonwood and willow trees (hello gorgeous fall shots!), over a hundred species of birds, a creek, and lots of small side trails that lead to these wonderful nooks and crannies. This is also where one of the cooler bridges are located. Big and red, the bridge makes for a very dramatic addition to your photos. The biggest concern with the woods is all the stickers and burs that cover much of the area – my poor pup Koda has had his fair share of hour long brush sessions with lots of detangler to get all the burs out. So while it is one of the ideal places for pet photography, just be conscious of where you’re having your dog go when you take them off trail.

Granite Dells

Now for the Granite Dells. These spires of pink rocks are a truly magnificent backdrop for Watson Lake and offer some extremely diverse settings for photography. You don’t even need to be a rock climber (and that is available here too) to get on top of some of the points. To one side of the Peavine Trail are the Dells that butt up against Watson Lake. Here you can take trails that take you on top of the rocks, right over the lake, and down into the canyon behind the dam. Think of how striking those shots could be! You can even have a backdrop of more of the Dells since they wrap around the lake. To the other side of the Peavine Trail is where the Dells peter off into the hills but are full of great trails and photogenic spots. Up there you will find a more desert look with lots of sand and rocks, cacti, shrubs and even a seasonal stream.

The Fields

Now there’s quite a few small spots of fields that surround Watson Lake. The closest to the lake and easiest to get to is to the east of the dock. Here it is easy to get shots where you are surrounded by a field of grass or with the lake, trees, or dells as a backdrop. This spot is best shot at near sunset where you are backlit by the sun and there’s a golden glow throughout the grass.

The Trails

There are tons of trails around the Prescott area and Watson Lake quite possibly contains about half of them. The main ones run by and around Watson, while dozens of smaller ones dart off in all directions off the main ones and even interconnect the main ones. Why is this relevant? It means that you can get lots of very unique photos in an extremely photographed location! It also means that all you have to do to get to another great spot is follow one trail or another.

The main one and easiest trail to follow is the Peavine Trail. This one takes you behind the lake and into the Granite Dells before continuing on into the grasslands. From the Peavine you can access all sorts of other trails. The Flume Trail is highly suggested since it will take you down the stream and canyon behind the dam that makes Watson Lake.

Overall Watson Lake is a must for a photography session. While it is a popular and well travelled spot, the area is big enough that you won’t be tripping over others or waiting in a line to get that great shot. In fact you’re more likely to run into people occasionally instead of constantly, giving you a chance to relax for whatever photos you wish to take.
